WFS v Red Kites, Report by Colin
Thursday saw 3 games with this report concentrating on our game against the Red Kites of Amersham who’d split themselves between 2 games on Monday
We were also being filmed by Rueters TV and should have a short video from them at a later date.
Benalmadena lined up with Dave 👑 in goal, with Dave 🦉, Colin and Keith across the back, Prak and Mercedes in the middle and Cornwalls’ very own Darren leading the line.
A little bird had suggested the Kites were a maturer team so I was surprised to see 4 of us in our 50’s
Early action highlighted their key players with Colin marshaling no.15 but when he got drawn to the ball it was quickly moved into the path of Cham their no.2 who buried it past Dave in goal.
Realising this was a good side we started moving the ball around playing keep ball where possible and good interchange between Prak and Darren fed the ball to Mercedes who scored the equalizer. 1-1 at the first water break
The game developed into each team having the ball, pulling off a shot which both keepers were doing incredibly well to save or snuffed out with resolute defending.
Dave 🦉with his headband was marauding the left wing and Keith was making good use of the right feeding Prak and Mercedes who in turn were being encouraged by Darren to pass into his feet.
Colin at times was drawn into this passing game which isn’t his strength, he’d much rather throw his leg in the way of a shot and just block or hassle than have to control and pass.
Of course once you leave your man he has only the keeper to beat, fortunately on this occasion, no 15 wasn’t able to take advantage with Dave saving at the expense of a corner.
Corners can be defining things, this one wasn’t though, Colin got a foot to the drilled corner and passed it to Mercedes who moved it onto Keith with half a pitch in front of him and only a keeper to beat……. Reuters with drones in the air and cameras recording were going to see how we do this….. rolling back the years Keith pushed the ball in front of him with his second touch, pulled back his right leg hit the ball true and hard…… is she recording this we all hope….and he hits the post, the scramble to follow up came to nothing and our best chance to win the game went begging.
Much energy was spent over the last half hour but the game remained 1-1
Post match beers and tapas was enjoyed and the Kites were found later in the day in the St Georges Day beer tent in Mesquita Square watching the live music. They said they’d thoroughly enjoyed themselves and were looking to bring more out next year

On paper the Blacks looked a stronger side and so it turned out to be.
The 1st quarter was a quiet affair with both sides playing some neat football.
Mark ⚽ scored for the Blacks following a good move.
Into the second quarter the Blacks are 1 nil to the good.
The Reds lose Garry ✈️ with a damaged ankle.
His replacement is Terry 🦹🏼♂️ who came on the off chance of getting a game.
The Blacks get a penalty. Mark 🐦 steps into his goal area with Steve 📢 abandoning his goal. Mark ⚽ scores to take the Blacks 2 nil into the lead.
The Blacks now begin passing the ball around nicely, the Reds chasing the ball.
Mark ⚽ gets his hat-trick. Neatly tucked into the bottom right of the goal.
The Blacks now 3-0.
The Blacks score again. This time Alan 🎤 turns well to his left and slots the ball into the bottom left corner.
The Blacks dominating the game. 4 nil.
Now Mark 🐦 goes off injuried in the 3rd quarter, to be replaced by a limping Garry ✈️.
Surprisingly the Reds pull one back through Dave 🏴. 4-1 to the Blacks.
Into the last quarter and the Blacks with knocking the ball around nicely. This appears to be one sided now.
Mark ⚽ slots the ball through Steve 📢 legs to make the score 5-1 to the Blacks. Marks ⚽ 4th goal.
Again the Blacks score, this time Jim 🏴 combines well with Alan 🎤. A nice 1 2 Jim 🏴 makes no mistake.
Rick 🎸 scores a well taking consolation goal for the Reds.
Blacks now 6-2 in the lead.
Jim 🏴 gets his second for the Blacks, making it 7-2, but Garry ✈️ goes down again with the injured ankle, which brings a premature end to the game.
MOTM. The Black Team for making the game look easy. Slick passing.
But Mark ⚽ picking up the individual MOTM.
Game 1 or is it game 3.
Report by your virtual correspondent AI Addio
Thursday dawned brightly in the pueblo as the knackered old crocks gathered on the pitch closest to the bar for a game of footie.
2 7 aside teams representing WFS reserves extra b team, realising that they were being filmed by Reuters for a special segment to be inserted into a news slot with 14 people breathing in, holding their stomachs and chests in, and then breathing out and letting it all sag again when they realised that Reuters are only interested in the proper footballers, playing on the far pitch. Anyway, on to the game.
Initially, it seemed that Dave had selected 2 closely matched teams and for the first10 minutes it seemed that goals were going to be a huge commodity. Steve scored the first for the blacks following a slick move and it remained at 1-0 until the 19th minute when graham doubled the lead.
Joe was having one of his unusual, quiet games but still managed to get a goal back for the Reds. Blacks were strongly in control from now on and but for some profligate shooting from the blacks ( one shot from brian narrowly avoiding an incoming Easyjet flight from Gatwick) beautifully fielded by our expert team of ballboys, the score would have been higher than 2-1 at the halftime water break.
The second half was all black dominated and Trev quickly added to the black lead closely followed by Pedro managing to finally get a shot between the green, netted area. Trevor scored again to make the score 5-1.
A moment of controversy when Steve called a penalty against himself for straying in the area, albeit having been pushed by a player wearing Red. The referee (H!) gave the penalty in the spirit of ‘well, they’re getting dicked anyway’. Well done Steve for being honest, no one else noticed and the reds didn’t claim the penalty.
Up stepped Han, he of the cultured, Dutch left foot to take the penalty. I would like to say that your correspondent dived full length to save the penalty, but the truth is that Han, he of the cultured, Dutch left foot hit it with his right foot and went straight at the keeper. Penalty save!
On to the final quarter when the Blacks added 2 further goals through an own goal and Steve being rewarded for his honesty and the game finished 7-1 to the Blacks.
We retreated to the bar where further Reuters filming took place, mainly centred around the amazing ability of WFS players being able to pour a glass of beer without it being the 50/50 head to beer ratio so favoured locally. All this being done whilst holding stomachs and chests in.
