“Keith, where’s that Dutch guy from anyway?”

Due to call-offs, Seven WF Samurai warriors were pressed into service under leaden skies at the Retamar.

Geoff on his final appearance for a while was given the honour of leading the attack for the tangerines. The usual warm-up was dispensed with as all the players knew they would be sweating spinal fluid today.

After a slow start both sides got into their respective rhythms. The tangerines, adopting a strategy of placing Geoff in the opponents box, always held a slender advantage over the Lemons.

As the sun came out midway through the match, water breaks were slightly longer than usual! The tenacious lemons fought all the way to the end and had drawn level at 11 all by the end of the match.

Before we get to “next goal the winner” segment there are some highlights to report. Geoff, poacher supreme, notched up 6 or 7 on the day. However, Boris noted it should have been 9 or 10!

The goals for the Lemons were equally divided across the “tres hombres”. However, Keith did score a sublime back-heeler high into the net proving that there is more to his game than just the whistle.

Next goal the winner lasted all of 20 seconds as Geoff latched onto a loose ball and rolled it in for a win for the tangerines.

It may have only been 7 players but everybody agreed it was a good session. Now the important stuff…the beer to replace lost fluid.

Discussions in the beer tent covered a wide range of topical subjects including England’s chances in the Test match (yawn), the dearth of good British comedians and Norman Wisdom’s ownership of a barbers in the pueblo.

Martyn popped in for a flying visit and he offered to straighten Geoffs nose, whacked after an accidental ricochet from a Dazza pass.

Martyn also told us about his impending birthday (milestone).

The gathering agreed that this might provide an excellent opportunity to crack open the “Hendos”.
