Match report by Geoff

REDS ….3 versus BLACK….3

After the obligatory team photo H and Breck took the opportunity to remind everyone of the ethos of walking football in particular that it is a no contact sport with no running and tackling from behind or the side.

This message seemed to have had the desired effect in a what was an excellent game, superbly refereed by John,  with a draw in the end a fair result.

Both teams played some excellent 3 touch football with chances falling to either side before Welsh Steve scored yet another opportunists goal for the second match in succession to put the Blacks one up after 10 minutes.

Try as they might, the Reds despite Big Al being a constant goal threat, fell further behind to a Dazza special which fortunately went in off the crossbar otherwise it would have undoubtedly disappeared forever into the stratosphere as is the norm!

After the first water break H, who had taken took over in goal from Kevo for the Blacks, made several good saves one in particular from Big Al which was destined to go into the top corner, which he flicked over the crossbar.

Then Keef slotted one in from close range and turned away in celebration only to hear Fireman Sam blow the whistle to disallow the goal for stepping a good yard into the penalty box. So much for spirit of the game for which he had been the most vocal advocate!

Shortly afterwards danger man, Big Al, hit an unstoppable low show which went in off the post for the Reds to pull a goal back.

After the second water break Keef aka Mr Nobody got his ‘revenge when he equalised for the Reds, slotting the ball past Dazza in the Blacks goal, who had earlier made two excellent saves from the threatening Reds bombardment and had a lucky escape when another shot from Mike luckily hit the post.

Then to make matters worse the Scotsman put the Reds in front with just 5 minutes to go.

The Blacks, led by the inspirational Johan in midfield, responded superbly to  equalise in the last minute when a delightful through pass from Terry, mine host of the Lilac Tree, found old stager Ken unmarked to slot the ball into the back of the Reds net in his own inimitable style.

Almost immediately the whistle went for full time and an enthralling match came to an end.

It is worthy of note that Bambi had his best game for weeks in midfield and constantly broke down the Reds threat in midfield. He does, I now believe, understand that it is much easier to run without his hands in both pockets as has been the case recently during the colder weather.

Boris was his usual calming influence in defence for the Reds ably supported by Jonny.

On the bar balcony afterwards Keef took a bit of stick for his spirit of the game comments, not least because he celebrated a goal knowing full well he was well inside the penalty area.

The aforementioned was the exact opposite of Dazza who having accidentally handled the ball earlier in the match with Fireman Sam waving play on for whatever reason he decided to pick up the ball  for which he was then rightly penalised and nearly giving  a goal away from the resultant free kick. What a pillock!

The banter continued rounding off what had been a fantastic morning.
