Match Report by Steve C

Bleedin’ Red Hearts 2 Aces of Spades 2

A few changes were made to the published team sheets prior to kick off. In addition, there were two new players to welcome today. Paul (right Photo with pal Al) and Walter (below left, with Geoff), the latter one of the oldest to don a WF tabard.

Today’s adjudicator was Steve with KDN returning to a playing role. The controversial “no tackling” rule was in operation again which at least gave us something to debate in the bar later.

KICK OFF

Both teams began slowly, trying to spread the ball about but the contest soon became a bit of a scrappy affair as both sides battled for midfield dominance.

The gusty conditions, reminiscent of the infamous “Hampden Swirl”, didn’t help matters either.

The reds took a 2 goal lead in the first half. The first from Breck (or was it Alvin?) came from some nice approach work from Dave the Owl. The second from Alvin (or was it Breck?) was a cracking lob which caught out Kevo in no man’s land, curling just under the bar. The ‘swirl’ could have played a part in this goal but I think we just got our first GOTM contender.

Into the second half and the reds came close to increasing their lead, however, Kevo pulled out a couple of fine saves to keep the blacks in the game.

Unfortunately Martyn had to retire injured and Keith headed to the bar early to balance up the numbers.

Sensing their opportunity, the blacks came close to pulling back the deficit on a couple of occasions. Finally they made the breakthrough, a well placed shot from Rory came through a ruck of players defending a free kick, to nestle in the bottom corner of the net.

Into the last ten minutes now and the blacks managed to grab an equaliser in rather controversial circumstances. However, a WF VAR check, he say Goal and Bob was lost for words.

With minutes remaining Rory squandered an opportunity to win the match but he returns to the UK haunted by his miss!

At full time the score remained at 2-2.

Up to the bar and as expected the topics of “running” and “tackling” in the modern WF game featured high on the agenda. Will we ever have an answer? Maybe on Thursday.
