The day had finally arrived! The first game back at our spiritual home of Benahavís. 14 men straining at the leash to get out there.
The teams lined up, for the blues, Kieran, Paul, Tony, Popeye, Rob F, Nick and John and the whites, Alex, Bjorn, Gary, Bill, James, Neville and Rob E.
And the battle that followed didn’t disappoint, Moments in and Nick flew into a tackle on James, nearly beating Vinnie Jones 30 year old record of a booking after 5 seconds!
James picked himself up and, in a moment of mistaken identity, had a quiet word in Tony’s shell-like!
John, who had finally rediscovered his shooting boots, fired the Blues into the lead with a fine strike.
Another basketball game ensued with some great passing and movement. The score after the second quarter was 3-2 to the Whites after decent finishes from James and Keystone Cops defending from Blues.
There would have been many more goals had it not been for some magnificent goalkeeping at both ends. Guest man Kieran matching Alex ‘The Cat’ save for save.
Referee Rob Humphrey sharply spotted Bjorn in the 6 yard box after one previous warning. Nick stepped up and coolly slotted it into Alex’s arms.
However, he made amends shortly after with a superb strike getting the Blues back on track.
It was still in the balance until the final quarter when John bagged another brace to make the final score 6-4 to the Blues.
Debutant Gary looks a good addition to the club and Kieran is welcome any time.
It was truly magical to be back playing the Beautiful Game back where we belong, big thanks to Paul and Tony for sorting our future out with the local council.
And big thanks to Amanda for her tireless efforts keeping the beers flowing during the after match punditry.
The future looks bright
