Rorys Remeniscing
Now is the Owl of our redemption
Two well matched sides lined up against each other at the Poli in game two.
While the blacks welcomed back Nev, big Frank was making a return for the reds. The latter is a skilful player with a shot as hard and fast as a fart out of Rory’s nether regions after a night on the curry.
The reds had the best of the possession data 99.9%, but the blacks were taking a leaf out of Pep’s coaching manual by making the most of their 0.01% and looking the more likely team to score.
Overlapping goalkeeper our Keef was only one dodgy pass away from conceding a calamitous goal.
Somehow the blacks took the lead thanks to movement of Mick (reminiscent of Pinocchio on speed) up front. It’s either feast or famine with the enigmatic frontman, and today was turning into a full buffet.
For the blacks first goal a careless back pass from the Owl allowed staccato Mick to jink in and leave Eddie for dead. An opportunistic finish.
Blacks 1-0 Reds
No look pass Dave the Fox was having a much improved game with a good 30% of his passes reaching its intended recipient.
The blacks were starting to threaten the reds’ goal but always ready, steady Eddie stood firm.
Norn Iron’s midfield dynamo Laurie was making energetic runs down the right flank and the blacks’ defence parted like the Red Sea.
Big Frank ambled through and stroked a lovely shot past Nev who had dropped into goal.
Blacks 1-1 Reds
The blacks were undaunted and always had hope as long as Mick didn’t break any of his strings and fall over. Sure enough, some typically industrious work from Prak and Kevo sent the marionette through on goal. The puppeteers worked overtime to enable the prolific striker to bury it in the back of the goal to give the reds a well deserved lead.
Blacks 2-1 Reds
As you know at WFS we love a story of redemption. Sure enough, the Owl, who had gifted the first goal to Geppetto’s progeny was brilliantly put through by Frank to slot the ball in at the near post past Nev’s somnambulant right foot.
Dave fell to the floor, kissed the WFS badge on his shirt and thanked the spirits for his redemption. What a finish.
Final score Blacks 2-2 Reds
Fezzas Findings
he reds certainly looked the more to dominate the game with with some good passing from the back into midfield but then they ran out of ideas…
As the blacks got some possession the exact same could be said of the them…
There was little to trouble either goal keeper in the first 10 minutes as attacks fizzled out..
The reds had Graham, Bambi trying 1-2’s from passes from Boris, Trevor and Alan.. H and Klaus keeping the back door shut.. Pete snuck in down the right and had a few efforts at the near post saved..
The second period after the water break followed much the same pattern.. however Alvin upped his running and had to be reprimanded on several occasions.
The blacks with Seaman in goal looked secure when the rest of the team pushed up… Ian operated down the right, Ton down the left Sean and Paul in midfield with Graham & Steve trying to get the ball forward.. Ken the goal poacher hovered across the front waiting for the chance to score..
Heading towards another water break and the deadlock was broken Alvin had made a couple of saves but Glyn let loose and the ball arrowhead between the goalie legs and nestled in the far corner 1-0 !
The blacks only had them selves to blame and started to push more and more players forward… this left a number of gaps which the reds exploited…
Step up David Seaman (Fred) save 1.. Glyn was set through on goal with Fred to beat to make it 2-0.. he smashed it to the goal keepers left and rolling back the years Fred, Seaman like threw out his left hand and diverted the ball for a corner !
Save 2 within minutes of this Glyn was again bearing down on goal, he hit the ball which was heading for the back of the net when somehow Fred raised his left knee and diverted the ball for another corner ! Score still 1-0..
The Blacks raised their game and the Reds made a couple of late challenges and the ref blew for an indirect free kick. Sean lined the ball up and let fly… (the bar explanation was he knew the keeper would save it !)
Klaus did save it and directed a wicked spinning ball to the edge of the box, Ken was directly in line and hit a volley that almost took the net off…
1-1 and all to play for.. both team now went for it in the last 10 minutes with some smart football…Alvin left his goal and handled outside the box.. the reds unfortunately didn’t hit the target with the resulting free kick.
Alan had a fabulous effort that not even Seaman would have saved as it curled goal bound hitting the wrong side of the post.. Alvin almost won it hitting a dipping shot, H managed to flap his hands up and it must have been the waft of air up that made the ball rise enough to hit the bar and bounce away from goal…
The game that was played in a good spirit came to an end at 1-1..
Well done everyone it was an enjoyable game to ref and be part of..
