Rorys Ramblings-What no penalties?

The boys had factored in that they could each fire a few long range missiles over head high before being slapped on the wrist by John the ref. The smarter players had brought a helmet to avoid serious concussion and an unscheduled visit to the emergency room.

It was another tight game with the blacks quickly setting out their advanced maths credentials by marking out a series of complex shapes, which if viewed from space would be proof of the existence extraterrestrial life. Although the reds were not quite as smart when passing around the opposition they had marginally better strikers and therefore looked more likely to bang one in.

Our Keef was in goal for the reds and was called upon early to deflect a few speculative shots around the post. The blacks dynamic midfield runners of Laurie, Rick and Prak were making a mockery of the reds Steve Bruce-esque defence. Pete and Tommy, a sturdy duo with a passion for leaving their boot makers’ logo on the opposing players’ calf muscles.

Surprisingly, it was the reds who snatched the lead following some neat approach play from Dazza and Glyn. Fez took it nicely on his trusty left peg and slotted in the first for the reds.

Reds 1-0 Blacks

John had surprisingly little to do in a game full of runners, foulers and head high ball bashers. The lads were curiously well behaved, resulting in an exciting clash of footballing styles. The blacks intricate passing moves plotted a route through the reds’ defence with Prak and Jim combining nicely to set one up for the owl, who duly obliged and picked his spot in the top corner. Dazza flapped and pushed the shot into the air over his own head. He had several more flaps  and almost took off before realising he’d completely missed the ball which slowly nestled in the back of the net. Dazza’s attempt at unaided human flight was unsuccessful, but there’s always the next game.

Reds 1-1 Blacks

The blacks persisted with their free-flowing passing game with the bee and the owl stretching the blacks defence and Laurie’s tireless running picking out the gaps. Sadly they couldn’t find the final killer touch. The reds more route 1 approach yielded a corner from which Darren drilled in a cross which caused mayhem in the blacks defence. The ball popped up off an unsuspecting defender for Rory to volley into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Reds 2-1 Blacks

The reds knew they needed at least one more goal if they were going to make the game safe. It was end to end stuff, before a neat passing moves plotted by the reds released Glyn on the left. The big front man fired in from a tight angle beating our Keef at the near post. Schoolboy error from the “experienced” glove man.

Reds 3-1 Blacks

The blacks weren’t done and launched wave after wave of attacks on the reds’ goal where Paul kept them in it with a couple of smart saves. With the seconds ticking down the blacks won a corner. Could they grab a consolation goal? Rick ghosted in on the edge of the box and guided a well struck corner into the back of the net. What a goal. Unfortunately for the blacks it was too late to affect the outcome of the game which ended Reds 3-2 Blacks

Another great game between two well matched sides playing good football. Thanks again to John for keeping everyone in line.
