Time until the next game at Benahavis

Match report by Rob Fitzgerald

Benahavís Stadium 1/6/21

Another great turnout followed by another great game. 8-a-side with 2 new players. Andy & Chris were made welcome and produced two of the finest debuts we have witnessed.

The first quarter was the usual close cagey affair with much probing but only 1 goal scored by Kieran the Blues. Into round 2 and the Blues ran riot with 4 more well taken strikes. Popeye and Greg notching before Kieran added 2 for his hat trick.

Whites only reply a superb left peg hit from new man Andy.

5-1 into the third quarter and a slight reshuffle to even things up and due to another unfortunate injury to Blues front man Rob E.

The goals kept coming with the Whites now making a game of it with new man Chris cracking a debut strike to match Andy’s.

James and Andy also netting for the Whites.

The Blues though, responded in style with Greg, Neville twice (one an absolute corker) and Duncan, celebrating his first game back for well over a year, getting on the scoresheet.

Score going into the forth quarter 9-4 in Blues favour.

No sign of the relentless pace or the competitiveness dying down…..nor the goals!

Andy completed his hat trick and Kieran, now playing for the Whites, added 3 more. For the Blues Neville joined the hat trick brigade and Rob F found the top corner with a rare left footer.

Another water break and the question was asked who was up for another quarter?

Everyone to the man was up for it. The now legendary 5th Quarter? 11-7 to the Blues. Could the Whites complete a magical comeback?

Unbelievably, thanks to goals from Tony (playing his ground-breaking false number 5 role) Bill with a trademark left foot finish and 1 more each for new boys Chris and Andy the score stood at 11 all !!!

Much respect to the man in the middle, Rob Humphries, an old school ref who actually talks to his players. He revved up the tension at full time with that famous old war cry ‘Next goal wins’ !

Breathless and goalless for 7 minutes with missed chances at both ends Rob F found space to slot home the golden goal for the Blues.

You could hear the sighs of relief (and disappointment) in several nearby villages.

Great banter and discussion in the bar after. Roll on next week….

PS: must mention Popeyes fine headed goal having to be chalked off (players under 4 feet should be allowed to head the ball)

Mom: has to go to Andrew. 4 goals in 4 different quarters on his debut.

And relax!!
