Tuesday 10 May at San Pedro, Marbella
On a balmy evening in Marbella, the Benahavis Boys lined up for a 5 aside 4 touch game as follows :-
Whites lined up – Rob Fitz, Doug, James, Bill & PJ and the Blues – Alex, Tony, Bob, Nick & Popeye
Doug was making a welcome return in goal tonight and demonstrated amazing agility keeping out some well struck shots from the Blues👍.
With only 5 players on each side, pass and move was key in this game and Whites took an early lead with a well constructed move which was finished off comfortably by James..1-0
Blues came back strongly with Nick getting on the scoresheet to make it 1-1 but shortly before the break, the ex copper, James, fastened onto a loose ball and made no mistake from 8 yards making the score 2-1 to the whites.
Blues fought back hard and after the interval Popeye neatly sidestepped PJ to level the match at 2 all.
Whites were on the back foot at this stage and Tony, who got his hatrick last week, clearly left his shooting boots at home and squandered several chances for the Blues. But Nick got his second on the night for the Blues to lead 3-2
Whites needed some inspiration at this point and so up steps Rob Fitz but unfortunately for him he found Alex in goal more than a match and either saved or made Rob miss 3 times when clean through 🤷♂️😩.
It was end to end stuff at this stage, Bill hit the post for Whites and Popeye hit the bar and the post for Blues😤.
A breakthrough seemed imminent and Rob Fitz atoning for his earlier misses slotted home for the equaliser 3 each.
Both teams were tiring at this point, Blues false 5 after trundling upfield in a desperate attempt to score, couldn’t get back to defend to leave his teammates outnumbered only for Bill to clip the ball onto the bar and rebound down on Alex’s back and end up across the line!
Controversy ensued! should the goal be awarded to Bill? Was it an OG off the keeper? Was it a goal at all because as an overhead height shot which did not directly enter the goal should the goal be disallowed? VAR was no help in this situation but the incident did allow for heated debate post match in the bar at The Venta! 🍻
The scoring was completed by James who completed his hat-trick for the Whites to run out winners 5-3
PJ for the Whites was commanding at the back and Bill was a tad unlucky not to be on the scoresheet for them.
Bob & Nick both worked tirelessly for the Blues and put in a shift to cover for Tony who always seemed to be stranded upfield…🙄 The Chairman needs to figure out his best position.
Popeye hit the post again late on but too little too late🥵.
Finally, a special mention for Rob Humphries who came down to referee the game. 👏👏 Good to see you back Rob and hope to see you on the pitch soon 👍🤞
