Walking Football Spain First Anniversary

Walking Football Spain is one year old this week!

We started on Thursday 18th May 2017 in Elviria with 5 players and we now have 75 registered players, including some of our regular visitors.

We have established three teams along the Costa del Sol, in Marbella, Benalmadena and San Pedro.

We have also established some regular tournaments that we will be visiting each year, in the Algarve, Almeria and in Gibraltar.

We have signed seven sponsors altogether. With Avalon Europe being our very first sponsor with a pitchside banner. Followed by Bodyworks Health Clinic who sponsor our Marbella team. MyGuideMarbella sponsor us by giving us a free premium page on their site and they are also sponsoring some tournaments. Fluent Finance Abroad sponsor our San Pedro team and Smart Currency Exchange sponsor our Benalmadema team. We have also just agreed a deal with Blacktower Financial Management who will be sponsoring our weekly newsletter. Plus, Our Bar in Calahonda are our newest sponsors and has quickly become our new regular drinking hole!

We have also established strong links with the press along the Costa del Sol and have collected 32 press cuttings from Marbella newspapers, magazines and radio over the past year.

We have also had some sadness along the way, with the loss of Gordon Powell at a tournament in Portugal. Plus we have had three players suffer achilles tendon tears (all three players being Scandinavian oddly), which have forced them out of the game for 9 months.

On the positive side, everyone has bonded and made some new and really strong friendships, especially the tournament players. And it has been great to see certain players grow and develop as their confidence on the pitch has grown.

I wanted to say a big thank you to all the players who have spread the word far and wide and brought friends and colleagues along, as most of our growth has been organic.

We have a great bunch of lads who all play respectfully towards each other. There are no heavy challenges in training and barring maybe one or two instances, we have picked up no injuries due to heavy challenges, most injuries being simple pulls and strains. And these injuries have reduced dramatically lately as most players bodies have become used to playing football again after a 20 or 30 year absence.

Everyone is looking forward to the next 12 months!
