Walking Football Almeria – Tournament Update

Walking Football Almeria. The tournament in Hercaul-Overa came to a close yesterday with our team, WFS Benalmadena, who are sponsored by Smart Currency Exchange who have an office in La Cala de Mijas, finishing 3rd in the competition overall, out of 12 teams.

We won 7 games out of 9 and scored a total of 18 goals, losing just 2 games by the narrow margin of 1-0 both times! One of these defeats we had a Woody goal disallowed against Man City 1, who are apparently one of the best teams in the North West and win most of the competitions up there.

Out of the 18 goals we scored, Hugh Wood, who is currently in the final 30 selection for the Over-50 England Walking Football team, was our top scorer with 9 goals, before missing out on the final couple of games with a knee injury. Daryl Collins scored a creditable 4 goals but also contributed many assists, particularly for Woody. Keith Samuels and John Wright both scored twice with Keith scoring from a back heel. Our final player to get on the scoresheet was Joe McKeveer with 1 goal.

We did also pick up a few injuries unfortunately and had to play the final game with 7 players on the pitch and no subs to choose from. Mark Grufferty, Hugh Wood, Brian Gregory and Joe McKeveer all picking up injuries. However, the worst was unfortunately to Alex Ness who tore his achilles tendon whilst in goal. We are hoping that it is only a partial tear and that he will not be out for too long.

This is the first proper Walking Football tournament that we have played through and I think we have shown that we have a very strong core of a team that can take on some of the very best in the UK and Spain.

Well done to everyone that took part and particular thanks to Brian Gregory for stepping in at the last minute and organising the trip.
