Walking Football Spain – Dates for the Diary!

With so much going on at the moment, I thought I would set out a post to make sure that everyone knows what is happening and when.

Monday 5th February 2018 – New Benalmadena Pitch and New Time Slot!

This coming Monday at 10.30am, we are trying out a new pitch and at a new time. Our regular Benalmadena pitch at El Retamar is booked out for a hockey tournament all day, so Keith Samuels suggested we give the brand new pitch at Polideportivo Benalmadena Pueblo a try. If we like it, then there is no reason why it could not become our new permanent Benalmadena home. The pitch has only just been laid and they have a variety of goals in different sizes we can use. El Retamar is a nice pitch but because they water it, then the ball does tend to zip a bit too quickly. We are also trying out a morning session, as the majority of players voted to move the sessions from evenings to mornings. There are a few players who can’t make Monday mornings, so we will have to see how the numbers go. The pitch is on Avenida Juan Luis Peralta in Benalmadena Pueblo. Keith went and booked it and has promised that they will open the bar for us!

Tuesday 6th February 2018 – Gibraltar Training Session

As well as being our regular San Pedro session, we are also holding a practice session from 8pm for all the players who have registered to play in Gibraltar on the 7th March. I know not everyone can make next Tuesday, but I hope we can get as many as possible to come along to the 5-a-side pitches.

Thursday 8th February 2018- Visit by 4 members of Gibraltar Walking Football team!

I have been told that 4 members of the Gibraltar walking football team who we are playing against in March, will be joining in our regular Thursday session at Elviria! Clearly on a scouting mission! If they do turn up, then please make them welcome and let’s show them what is in store for them on the 7th March!

Wednesday 7th March 2018 – Gibraltar Tournament

On Wednesday 7th March we are taking 2 teams of Over 65s to Gibraltar for a mini-tournament. Kick off time is 10.30am. We need to work out drivers for the day. Players registered to attend are Brian Gregory, Jim King, Tony Jones, Ron Waugh, Maurice Nichol, Ron Young, Brian Russell, Charles Buckman, Steve Chapman, Philip Cross, Steve Whitehouse and Fred Harding. If any of the players listed can now not make it, please let me know asap.

March Date to be Announced – Memorial Service and Match for Gordon Powell

I have been speaking with Gordon’s daughter Tennessee, and she is looking to hold a memorial service in Marbella for Gordon sometime in March. I would like to hold a memorial match for him in San Pedro, where he lived, with a round robin of matches just between ourselves, with all our sponsors and staff present as well. More details to follow.

Tuesday 17th April to Friday 20th April 2018 – Almeria Tournament

Steve Chapman apparently thought the tournament was in May, so please all make sure you have the correct dates in your diary. We leave for Almeria on the 17th and return on the 20th. All the rooms have been booked in Hostal Zurich in the centre of Hercaul-Overa. Three teams from Man City will be playing and there should be 16 teams in total. Matches are 8-a-side. Players registered to attend are John Wright, Keith Samuels, Rob Brown, Daryl Collins, Steve Chapman, Charles Buckman, Alex Ness, Mark Grufferty, Robert Fitzgerald, Hugh Wood, Kevin Narain and Jim King.

Thursday 10th to Friday 11th May 2018 – Visit to Marbella of 2 Teams from Algarve

Two teams who were at the Algarve tournament, Tavira and Olhao, will be visiting us here in Marbella in May. We will arrange some matches at Elviria on the Thursday and probably San Pedro for the Friday.

Thursday 17th May 2018 – Our First Anniversary!

This date will mark a full 12 months since we first started with founder members Fred Harding, Brian Gregory, Keith Samuels and Spencer Anderson. Not sure what we will do yet so if anyone has any ideas, please let me know?

Thursday 27th to Friday 28th September 2018- Hosting our own Walking Football Tournament

We are hosting our very own Walking Football tournament at Finca Naundrup in Calahonda. We already have a team from the UK booked in – Stamford Strollers from Stamford in Lincolnshire. And we have interest from a few other teams as well. We are hoping to get the inventor of Walking Football, John Croot to come over as our guest of honour and hand out the trophies. We are also planning for qualified walking football referee and popular visiting player, Jonathan Sinfield to referee the games. Entertainment will be provided by Adam Kerr’s band, the Groef Tones.

We do also have a number of other teams that are looking to visit us during the year so I will keep you posted!
